SOUND FAMILIAR?

When English gets in the way of international business

If you work with overseas partners or offshore teams, you’ll recognise this.

Even when everyone is speaking English, conversations don’t always land.

Pace, accent, and informal phrasing can cause confusion, especially in remote meetings or emails.

You end up repeating yourself, second guessing how you sound, and wondering whether simplifying your language will feel uncomfortable or patronising.

What your international partners may be experiencing

They’re working hard to understand you, but it takes effort and confidence

Some people quietly dread conversations with native English speakers, especially in fast-paced meetings or on the phone. They’re concentrating hard, translating in their heads, and hoping they’ve understood correctly.

Often, they find other non-native English speakers easier to follow than British, American or Australian colleagues, not because the ideas are simpler, but because the language is more predictable.

BUT IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE THIS WAY

With a few smart adjustments, your communication becomes easier to follow and quicker to act on

When you learn to speak and write in a more globally accessible way:

✓ Calls and meetings feel smoother and less effortful for everyone

✓ Instructions are followed more accurately, with fewer clarifying messages

✓ International partners ask more useful questions, earlier

✓ You reduce misunderstandings that lead to delays, rework and missed opportunities

✓ You still sound professional and like yourself, just clearer

And that's exactly what you'll learn in these workshops!

HI, I'M SHELLEY PURCHON

I’m the founder of English Unlocked and for 25 years I taught English to people from all over the world. I became highly skilled at adapting my speech so that even beginners could understand me.

When business professionals learn this clearer way of communicating, conversations become calmer, more focused and more effective, especially when working across borders.

This practical training is delivered in two short workshops. The techniques I developed over years of trial and error are condensed into a clear, practical approach you can use straight away.

Your international partners and teams will understand you more easily, whether in meetings, on calls, or in writing. Even when you slow down or simplify, you won’t sound patronising. You’ll sound clear, professional and confident.

5 Star Feedback

This training is for you if

You work in an SME that operates internationally. For example, you:

  • Manage an overseas supplier or factory
  • Delegate to an offshore team
  • Sell services or products internationally
  • Run meetings with international partners
  • Notice misunderstandings, delays or drop-offs caused by unclear English

It is especially useful if you work remotely and rely heavily on calls and email, where you do not always have body language cues to support meaning.

Case study

How we helped Amazon Web Services improve international understanding

A global programme lead at Amazon Web Services noticed a recurring pattern: after meetings, actions were not always taken as expected. The issue was not competence. It was communication.

They approached English Unlocked after reading Shelley’s writing on inclusive communication for non-native English speakers. They could not find another provider offering this kind of specialist training.

Shelley designed a bespoke two-part programme to make communication more globally accessible, covering both spoken clarity and vocabulary choices.

The result: clearer meetings, smoother collaboration, and more shared understanding across international teams.
