How to help refugees into employment

Job seeking norms are different around the world. What problems does this cause for refugees in the UK?

Finding a job in the UK can be especially demoralising for BN(O) visa holders and refugees.

Many are overqualified for vacancies they apply for, and yet may still be rejected. Why?

What is considered a ‘perfect’ application in other places can often lead to immediate rejection in the UK, because recruitment works differently everywhere.

This workshop will help you see UK hiring practices through fresh eyes. Our cultural insights will help you to move jobseekers from other countries into successful employment.

A new perspective

How is recruitment done differently in Kyiv or Hong Kong?

For ESOL teachers, employment advisors, and resettlement teams, the challenge isn’t just fixing up a CV; it’s helping clients unlearn the professional habits of their home countries and adapt to the specific expectations of the UK job market.

The course includes insights from BN(O) visa holder Shelly Lau and Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zhomer.

These insights will help you to-

  • understand and anticipate mistakes and omissions made by applicants when applying for jobs
  • give support which is more targeted and relevant to specific nationalities
  • explain cultural differences to your clients in simple terms

"I have been fortunate enough to do two training sessions with Shelley and they were both great! Full of useful and practical ideas to help me in my work with a whole range of people from all over the world. Would thoroughly recommend!"

Sensitivity is key

In this workshop we help you provide support which is culturally and emotionally sensitive.

We outline common mistakes made by jobseekers from other countries which stem from cultural differences, and provide you with resources to help you explain these to job seekers in simple terms.

We know these resources work because we’ve used them to help Ukrainians and BN(O) visa holders into employment. The resources were commissioned using Home Office funding, and now they’re available for you.

What will you learn?

You will be able to help clients avoid some common mistakes made by candidates from overseas, for example-

  • Ignoring points on the person specification
  • Giving vague answers in interviews
  • CVs that are too long, or incomplete
  • Over-reliance on AI
  • Scepticism about the benefits of volunteering
  • Inability to identify their own transferable skills

More than just a 'language problem'

Unlike the UK, recruitment in Hong Kong, Ukraine or Afghanistan is not about skills and competencies. Transferable skills are not generally the focus of interviews. How does this hold back candidates from those countries? More than a fluency problem, this requires a mindset shift.

If your client has never before asked themselves “what skills do I have?”, how can you get them thinking about this?

Our resources, free to download for attendees, will help you to explain these cultural differences.

These resources will make it easier for you to explain in simple terms-

  • CVs and cover letters
  • Transferable skills
  • The benefits of volunteering
  • How to change your application for different vacancies
  • The STAR technique

Who is this workshop for?

Everyone who helps forced migrants to find employment will find the training useful. For example-

  • ESOL teachers
  • Employment Advisors
  • Employment Coaches
  • Resettlement teams.

If you’re an ESOL teacher, this workshop will help you deliver lessons that make a real difference in the lives of your unemployed learners.
